Second and Third Votes Inconclusive

The 115 cardinals taking part in the conclave to elect Pope John Paul II’s successor, the 265th Roman pontiff, took two votes this morning but elected no new pope. Ballots from those votes were burned and produced black smoke, indicating that no choice had been made. Two more votes are scheduled later today. When a new pope is chosen, smoke from the Vatican chimney will be white; the next ballot burning is expected at 1500 EDT.
